St. Paul’s L’Amoreaux Centre hosts Community Champions Week as a part of its March for Meals campaign this month. Yesterday, Toronto Police Service 42 Division - Constable Gary Gomez, Community Relations Officer, and Constable Dale Nichiporik, Community Relations Officer participated in Meals on Wheels delivery to show their support for our community’s seniors.
March for Meals includes not only Meals on Wheels but also other nutrition and food access programs. St. Paul’s L’Amoreaux Centre’s Community Champions Week will also include the Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Market on March 19, and “Healthy Eating for Healthy Aging” workshop on March 30th.
“We are excited to have Constable Gary Gomez and Constable Dale Nichiporik help to deliver meals during our March for Meals Community Champions week.” said Diane Duncan, Executive Director of St. Paul’s L’Amoreaux Centre. “ We have been fortunate to have exceptional long-term support from these two officers with our community safety programs, and it is a good complement to have them join our March for Meals campaign. They are helping us to raise awareness of the importance that access to nutritious food, which is appropriate for the dietary needs of seniors, has to health and wellbeing. The friendly contact with volunteers and staff who bring the meals provides essential social and safety components to the service.”
March for Meals is a North American campaign during the month of March, initiated by the Meals On Wheels Association of America, which seeks to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on the part of the local community. Senior Nutrition Programs across Canada and the United States, like St. Paul’s L’Amoreaux Centre, promote March for Meals in their local communities through public events, partnerships with local businesses, volunteer recruitment and fundraising initiatives.
St. Paul’s L’Amoreaux Centre Meals on Wheels/ Nutrition Awareness Program, funded by the Central East LHIN, delivers nutritious and culturally appropriate meals to seniors upon request. It also provides information on diet and nutrition by making referrals to registered dietitians and offering healthy eating workshops. Meals-on-wheels friendly visitors deliver meals and check the safety of clients. All meals on wheels are healthy choice meals that are low in fat, salt, and sugar. Special dietary needs can be accommodated, such as diabetic and pureed meals etc. We also offer meals for different ethnic communities, such as Western and Chinese.
