St. Paul’s is pleased to announce that it has received two New Horizons for Seniors grants funded by Human Resources and Social Development Canada. The Honourable Jim Karygiannis, M.P for Scarborough-Agincourt presented St. Paul’s staff, senior activists and community partners with two cheques from New Horizons for Seniors.
The St. Paul’s sponsored S.A.L.T. project (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together), is a partnership consisting of seniors in the community, law enforcement representatives and community partners. Its objectives are to identify crime prevention methods, legal education and personal safety strategies for seniors. S.A.L.T. also facilitates communication between law enforcement, seniors, their caregivers, and service providers in English and Cantonese. The project builds partnerships among seniors, community partners and law enforcement including Toronto Police 42 Division, Scotiabank and TD Bank.
The second project funded is the Tamil Speaking Seniors Volunteer Outreach. This project focuses on building and developing social networks, life skills and knowledge of health promotion within the Tamil speaking community. It also reaches out to vulnerable seniors' groups by keeping them active in their communities through outreach, volunteering and facilitating access to community services.
These two grants will create a stronger sense of community inclusion and integration. These initiatives reach out not only to seniors, but specific ethno-cultural groups inviting them to be actively involved in making their communities more integrated with and responsive to the needs of seniors.
