Recently, SPLC hosted two distinguished guests, Scarborough-Agincourt MP Jean Yip and Minister of Seniors Kamal Khera, to meet our teams, tour our buildings and connect with seniors in our community.
SPLC welcomed the opportunity to share with our local MP and the Minister of Seniors how our organization aims to empower all seniors in our community. Through their visit, they learned about SPLC’s wraparound services that help seniors achieve their best possible life and realize personal goals up to and including end-of-life.
Supporting Seniors
While visiting, MP Yip and Minister Khera met with seniors who volunteer to reach out to other socially isolated seniors by telephone, Zoom and through hand-written cards. The cards, designed by young people, include inspirational messages written by the volunteers in Korean, Tamil, English and Chinese. The cards are then mailed to seniors experiencing isolation. MP Yip and Minister Khera took a few moments to sign cards that were added to food hampers being prepared for delivery to some of our community’s most vulnerable clients. MP Yip recently shared an update in the House of Commons about this program.
Affordable housing
To demonstrate how important affordable housing is for seniors in our community, MP Yip and Minister Khera visited St. Paul's L'Amoreaux Centre, which offers 258 subsidized rental apartment units for seniors with low to moderate income.
Programs to keep seniors active
To showcase another side of services offered by SPLC, our special guests stopped by the Chinese Day Program where a gentle exercise class in progress with seniors attending virtually and in-person. And, through our Seniors Active Living Centre, they got to try their hand at a fun game of mini-tennis.
The GAIN Clinic
Our guests learned how our organization aims to addresses the complex and wide-ranging social and health needs of older adults and their caregivers. In recent years, our supports have grown to include specialized geriatric services with frail and complex seniors, and older adults experiencing homelessness, substance use and mental health concerns. MP Yip and Minister Khera met with members of our Geriatric Assessment and Intervention Network (GAIN) Clinic, which helps make it possible for seniors experiencing a health crisis or health decline to stay at home for as long as possible and get the care they need.
Thank you
Thank you to MP Yip for helping to organize this special visit. Thank you to Minister Khera for taking the time to visit SPLC and learn more about the important work being done in our community.
